deserve respect.  Workers should be paid promptly and be provided
with the necessary tools and specific instructions to do the job right.

Our workers have  a variety of skills, the following are some but not all
the types of jobs/skills found in the Downtown Community Job Center:

Street had become a nuisance to residents and business owners.
There was concern that day laborers had to compete aggressively
among themselves to take advantage of employment opportunities
from customers driving down the street.  In response to these
concerns, the City of Pasadena organized a committee consisting of
members from the community, day laborers, and city staff to find a
suitable location that would allow the day laborers a safe hiring
situation and provide opportunity for workers and their families to learn
strategies for long-term economic self-sustainability.

strategies for long-term economic self-sustainability.

The Committee considered numerous factors in making its
recommendations.  Accessibility to potential employers, accessibility to
day laborers and other unemployed persons, space, potential for local
economic development, potential for development of small business
enterprises, and a location that would address the concerns of the
entire Pasadena community.  The site at 500 N. Lake Avenue was
chosen unanimously, with the full support of the Pasadena Day Laborer
Association, and is now known as the Pasadena Community Job
Center.

Unlike its predecessors throughout Los Angeles County, the Pasadena
Community Job Center is unique in that it is not placed in an industrial
area of town, out of site and away from general civic activity.  It is a
storefront operation prominently located in a busy commercial district,
near a residential neighborhood.  This fact creates the potential for a
Job Center that is more than just a formal hiring site aimed at keeping
day laborers off street corners and parkways - it allows for economic
development, community building, and the improved health and
well-being of families through economic self-sustainability to occur
within a greater community context and partnership. The center
provides services to an average of 60 workers daily.
