East Los Angeles Literacy Project

East LA Project: is a program that provides ESL as a second language, and Spanish
literacy classes beginning with their native language (for adults) at no charge.  A
coordinator and 2 volunteers run this program. As part of our civic engagement
approach we teach our students their rights here in the United States, in a way that
they learn the language of this state to help them get better jobs, and know to be
aware of issues which impact them and how to solve those issues on their own
communities. Also if they are exploited, and what is that they can do to defend
themselves. Our mission is to expand the classes and the classes and provide more
places, hours, and days to bring in more students and volunteers, so we can make
this program grow at its best for the community. The project is raising funds to be able
to provide the right materials for the students since the classes are free. As an annual
holiday we have our own big celebration for this project. This event is known as the
International Literacy Day, which is celebrated around the world to mark all world wide
efforts to eradicate illiteracy. We will Celebrate this world event on September 9th,
2006.

                        Volunteers

We provide workshops every 3 to 4 months for volunteers interested in teaching
English or literacy to adults. After the workshop we give them sessions of how the
program works, meanwhile the volunteers involve themselves in teaching English or
Spanish Literacy to the adult students.

We are also looking for volunteers who would like to do childcare during the hours of
the classes so the students that have children can assist and participate at the
classes without having trouble with their kids. During the childcare we would like for
the toddlers enjoy the hours of the classes, so we would like for children to be busy
doing arts and crafts.

                   International Literacy Day:

Every year we celebrate International Literacy Day!  We will post this years event once
